Where is the community of Mariapfarr?
The Austrian municipality of Mariapfarr is one of the sunniest places of the country. It is part of the Salzburg Lungau region and lies at an elevation of 1,119 m. It is home to 2,370 people and covers an area of 47.36 km². In 923 AD one of the first churches of Mariapfarr (Althofen) was mentioned as “ecclisia ad lungovue” and is considered the mother church of Lungau. Joseph Mohr was priest in Mariapfarr from 1815 to 1817 and in 1816 he wrote the world-famous Christmas carol “Holy Night, Silent Night”.

Starting at 1, 497m and ascending to an altitude of 2,017m at the top station, winter athletes will be surprised by the amazing view of the mountains. There are more ski resorts in Obertauern and Mauterndorf, located 24km and 7km from Mariapfarr respectively. Mariapfarr boasts 50km of groomed cross-country trails. A 2km tobogganing run starts at Wielandhof snack bar. If you are planning to spend several days in Mariapfarr, you will be spoilt for choice by the large selection of hotels and accommodations.

Mariapfarr features 15 well waymarked Nordic-walking-trails, providing the largest network of Nordic walking and terrain trails in Austria with 119 km. Samsunn Vitality and Wellness Centre offers a 1,800 m² wellness and sauna area. Mountain Bikers and cyclists as well as hikers and climbers will find many challenging routes and trails. If you just want to relax and enjoy nature, take the gondola up the mountain and savour some delicacies at the top station. In nearby Mauterndorf you find the highest gliding airfield in Austria; there is also a lot to explore in Obertauern.
