Where is Ulten located?

The municipality of Ulten is located in South Tyrol, the northernmost region of Italy, and consists of the four villages of St. Walburg, Kuppelwies, St. Nikolaus and St. Gertraud. The municipality is located in the Ultental Valley, or "Val d'Ultimo" in Italian, which is part of the Burggrafenamt district community . This includes the municipalities of the Passeier Valley as well as the famous spa town of Meran.
The 40 km long valley of the Falschauer, a mountain stream in the Ortler Alps that flows into the Etsch, can be reached via the village of Lana in the Etsch Valley and runs parallel to the Vinschgau Valley to the north. The uppermost sections of the Ulten Valley are located in the 134,620-hectare Stelvio National Park (Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio), which is one of the largest nature reserves in Europe and extends across the four Italian provinces of South Tyrol, Trento, Brescia and Sondrio. This national park was established in 1935 to protect the nature of the Ortler region. The 3,905 m high Ortler is the highest mountain in South Tyrol and the striking eye-catcher of the Stelvio National Park. The Schwemmalm ski area, which is particularly popular with families, is located roughly in the middle of the Ulten Valley. The Ulten Valley wasalready a magnet for celebritiesaround 1900. The small spa resort of Mitterbad near St. Pankraz attracted personalities such as Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, Bismarck, Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann and Heinrich Mann. One reason for this visitor magnet was the famous doctor and philosopher Dr. Christoph Hartung von Hartungen, who owned his summer villa Hartungshausen in the Ulten Valley. Some well-known personalities are also in the spotlight in Ulten today. The cabaret artist and comedian Luis from South Tyrol has been delighting audiences throughout the German-speaking world with his humorous performances for years. In winter , the Ulten Valley is a popular destination for nature-loving winter sports fans. The Schwemmalm ski area offers slopes of varying degrees of difficulty, stretching over 25 kilometers and more than 1,000 meters in altitude. One of the longest valley runs in South Tyrol is five kilometers long and leads over wide, sunny slopes down to the valley. Thanks to modern transportation facilities, the slopes can be reached quickly and easily. Family-friendly routes and challenging slopes, such as the Asmol slope from Mutegg to the valley station, make the ski area an insider tip for guests and locals alike. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, the Ulten Valley offers a variety of winter activities such as cross-country skiing, tobogganing and ski boot hiking.
In summer , numerous hiking trails lead through green alpine meadows, rugged cliffs and picturesque mountain lakes. A highlight are the three famous Ultner Urlärchen, which are around 800 years old and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Ultner Höfeweg trail, which leads past rustic farms and idyllic huts, is particularly recommended.
The reservoirs of the Ultental Valley, including the Weißbrunnsee and Zoggler Stausee, characterize the landscape and are popular destinations for excursions and leisure activities such as fishing. Another cultural highlight is the ruins of Eschenlohe Castle, which was once the seat of the Counts of Ulten. The climate in the Ulten Valley is just as varied as the landscape. It ranges from the almost Mediterranean, temperate zone in the lower part of the valley with vineyards near Lana to the extreme climatic conditions in the high alpine area above 2,000 meters above sea level. Some mountain peaks at the end of the valley, in the Stelvio Pass Nature Park, rise to over 3,000 meters and are covered by extensive glaciers.
